Connolly Twins Arrival

Saturday February 15
We had plans to relax & get a few things done this weekend since Justin's sister & family graciously offered to take Sam for the weekend. Plans changed quickly!  We met our friends Katie & Chad Heron for lunch, then came home & napped. After awakening, I made justin clean the house with me like a mad person until about 9 pm. At 1100, I started to feel weird & have more contractions. I packed a bag for the hospital & tried to relax.

Sunday February 16. 34 5/7 weeks pregnant
At 215 AM, my water broke so we headed to the hospital. When we arrived, Justin brought over a wheelchair & wheeled me in. The nurse who came to bring us upstairs was very concerned about getting the new hospital floor dirty from the snow on the wheelchair tires & maybe we should get into a new one.  We thought this was ridiculous & told her either snow on the floor or amniotic fluid on 2 wheelchairs. She chose snow on the floor. We got into our room at about 330. My moms friend Wendy Gephart was one of the nurses so it was nice to see a familiar face.

My labor progressed quickly so I decided to get an epidural at 630.  Whoever invented the epidural deserves a medal, it was magical. (You were right Jen) At 8, I felt some pressure. Dr schaberger checked me, and I was fully dilated & the baby A was right there. Everyone frantically put on the gowns & I was wheeled into the OR delivery room (standard for twins). It was change of shift for the docs, so Dr merchitz came in & said nice to meet you let's have some babies. A few pushes later, Miles Andrew was born at 8:17 AM.

4 lbs 15 oz, 18.5"

He was taken to the next room to be assessed & Justin went with.  His APGAR scores where 4 at 1 minute & 7 at 5 minutes. This looks at heart rate, respiratory effort, activity, and appearance. Anything over 7 is good.

In the mean time, an internal monitor was placed on Baby B. The staff were all so calm it was very reassuring. We talked about work in between contractions. Thank you  again epidural! Baby B's heart rate began to drop so the Dr decided we would need to deliver with the help of a vacuum. Justin tried at this point to get a pic do Miles & I.

Miles was then taken to NICU. He was definitely pale!

Jack Garrett was then born at 8:40, 5 lbs, 2 oz, 17".
We apparently didn't get a photo right after birth. Sorry Jack!  The boys both sent to NICU & we're put on CPAP overnight. Jack was retracting (using extra muscles to breathe) quite a bit, which was disturbing. Luckily they both looked better as each hour passed.
